So it is the Bronze for Beezie!

What a spectacular Individual Olympic Final in Show Jumping which took place tonight in Hong Kong starting at 7:15 pm local time.  The course designed by Leopaldo Palacios (VEN) and Steve Stephens (USA) proved to be quite difficult as only 2 riders, Eric Lamaze (CAN) and Rolf-Goran Bengst (SWE) had double clear rounds.  These two riders rode in the jump-off to decide on the gold and silver medals and 7 other riders including Beezie Madden from Cazenovia, New York and McLain Ward of Brewster, New York battled for the bronze. I can’t remember in fact ever seeing so many riders in a jump-off.  Typically there are 2 or 3 only.

McLain trying to shave off as much time as possible took a short cut over some decorative brush.  This clever maneuver certainly proved the speed & handiness of Sapphire and resulted in what would have been the time-to-beat had it not been for the last wall fence which came crumbling down.  Darn!! All was not lost however as his cunning plan set the path for Beezie who saw it was possible to make this maneuver and save some time.  She and Authentic jumped brilliantly having a clear jump-off and the best time to nudge out ex-patriot Meredith Michaels Beerbaum (GER) who had to settle for 4th.

Eric Lamaze was the last to go while the Swede, who had a rail, had to watch with great anticipation of knowing which medal he would ultimately receive.  This was the ride of Eric’s career and he did it with gusto having a clear round which clenched the gold.  While exiting the arena, he was pointing to his brilliant horse, Hickstead, giving him all the credit and acknowledging the horse’s flawless performance.

It was great to see 2 North American riders on the podium AGAIN!  Don’t forget the US won the team gold and the Canadians, the silver!

All in all, it was not only great day for North American Show Jumping but a great day for horse sport in general.

Cheers,
Cindy
