It's been two days of surprising upsets for Team USA's show jumpers. In the riveting first team round, Olympic veteran McLain Ward and his gorgeous grey Antares F had a flawless clear round, as did Rich Fellers and the quirky chestnut Flexible. Beezie Madden, who is no stranger to Olympic competition and expected to have a strong performance, was eliminated in the first round with two refusals from her horse Via Volo. Rookie Reed Kessler and Cylana had a lovely first round with no rails, but the pair incurred one time fault for their cautious ride.
Day Two left fans a bit disappointed as well, and the tough course took several victims from many of the other teams. Saudi Arabia is the team to beat, with all four members putting in clear rounds. McLain's horse had a great round aside from landing a foot in the open water jump, costing them four jump faults. Beezie pulled a rail as well, and Reed had two jumps down in her effort not to have time faults. Rich and Flexible blasted around the course with another double-clear round, and the pair looks to be the USA's only hope for an individual jumping medal. As a team, the United States sits in 7th place. Competition resumes this afternoon, after which team medals will be awarded.
