Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, the factory where the popular Adequan joint supplement is produced, has reported a shortage of the drug due to a factory renovation that has been implemented to meet enhanced FDA quality standards.

As we head into the competitive season, veterinarians and owners of horses who are on Adequan should be aware that supplies will be limited, and Adequan will be out of stock for a short time.

Founded by Lori McCutcheon in 1989, Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown, PA has grown into a highly effective, not-for-profit organization giving neglected, abused and unwanted animals another chance at life in a loving home. Last year, 74 horses and 854 dogs found those forever homes through Last Chance Ranch!

It is the mission of Last Chance Ranch to rescue and rehabilitate domestic animals in need, and then adopt them out to caring, knowledgable homes where they will be cared for for a lifetime. LCR has helped horses, dogs, cats, donkeys, mules and many other types of animals, and works closely with the Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia. Whether it is a lovable dog with medical issues that make euthanasia the only option in an over-crowded city-run shelter; or a beautiful, terrified horse at auction and bound for slaughter, animals in trouble can find that last chance through the efforts of Lori, her staff and the dedicated volunteers of Last Chance Ranch.

Riding Gets High Tech: Track My Hack App

There are tons of smartphone apps out there to help you track and organize your exercise program, from programs that map out your daily run to apps that help you make healthy eating choices and create workouts, but until now there was nothing available to riders to track their horses' fitness.

Enter "Track My Hack", an app developed by Woof Wear, a manufacturer of protective horse boots. This app is designed specifically for equestrians, and is a helpful tool to help track progress as you log hours on the trail or in the fields conditioning your horses for spring competitions.

Start by entering profile information for you and your horse, tack up, hop on, and hit the "Start Hacking" button. The app will track the distance, speed, and time of your hack and allow you to save your route when you're done. You can even share routes with friends and see where your barn buddies are riding! Using GPS technology, Track My Hack creates a map of your route, which is a great feature when you are out blazing new trails in uncharted territory. Dressage riders can even use it to check the accuracy of schooling figures in the ring. To check out this neat little app for yourself, just search for it in the app store on your smartphone. Protecting Your Horses Using Quarantine Procedures

With the recent outbreaks of EHV-1 in nearby farms and popular show grounds, it's important to know what actions to take when you have a sick horse on your property.

The top priority when there is a contagious equine on your farm is to separate it from the healthy horses in the barn. Put the sick horse in a stall at the end of the aisle, and try to reduce traffic in and out of the area where the sick horse is located. Keep one empty stall between the infected animal and its healthy barn mates to minimize the risk of contact between horses. Stopping movement of horses in and out of your facility until there is no more risk of infection is always a good idea.

If the sick horse is well enough to be turned out, keep it in a separate paddock that does not share a fence line with areas where healthy horses are outside grazing.

If at all possible, assign one person to care for the infected horse who will not come into contact with any other horses. Make sure whoever handles the sick animal wears disposable gloves, coveralls or scrubs, and boots designated for use around the ill horse. Use separate tools, buckets, halters, etc. that will only come into contact with the sick horse. All clothing that is worn while caring for the infected animal should be washed immediately after use. Use bleach to disinfect equipment, feed and water buckets, wheelbarrows, and shoes frequently, and monitor the body temperature and health of other horses on the property on a daily basis.

And of course, if there is a horse on your farm that is infected with a contagious disease, always consult your veterinarian for treatment and control procedures. If appropriate action is taken, you can stop the spread of dangerous diseases and save the lives of the horses in your care.

USA Equestrian Trust Opens Application Period For Non-Profit Grants

USA Equestrian Trust is an organization that has given more than 1 million dollars in grants to non-profit groups that benefit the equestrian community. From contributing funds to bodies like USA Rening, Inc and the Arabian Horse Association to funding equine health research, USA Equestrian Trust has assisted equine non-profits in improving and growing equestrian sport in the US.

The 2013 application period is now open, and equestrian non-profit organizations can apply to the Trust for grant money from now until May 6, 2013. Applicants can find details about the requirements for grant eligibility and apply at http://www.trusthorses.org.
