PA horse racing is big!  Breeders and trainers are moving their operations to PA because of the lucrative incentive breeding program.  While Penn National, Grantville and Philadelphia Park in Bensalem offer flat racing, their northern cousin, Pocono Downs in Wilkes-Barre is all about harness racing http://www.officialusa.com/stateguides/horseracing/pennsylvania.html

According to PA Bred.com, Pennsylvania’s Breeding Fund Program distributes more money, on a per foal basis, than nearly every other state-bred program now in operation. Established in 1974, the Pennsylvania Breeding Fund has grown from a disbursement of $65,000 in its initial year of operation to over $15 million annually. http://pabred.com/whyPA/whyPA.php

PA Horse Shows

Starting as a one day show way back in 1896, Devon has become a major venue for  hunter/jumper, Saddlebred and driving competitors in late May. In fact this show combined with a lavish country fair is the oldest and largest multi-breed outdoor competition in the US, is  USEF-A rated and enjoys international recognition. http://www.thedevonhorseshow.org/

In late September DAD (Dressage at Devon) lights up the autumn nights with its world-class show bringing close to 35,000 spectators.

One of the largest indoor horse shows in the United States, the PA National Horse Show in Harrisburg rolls out its carpet in mid-October and features some of the nations best hunter/jumper combinations. It spans across 10 days and enjoys CSI-W status. http://www.panational.org/

Bucks County Horse Park is home to a variety of horse shows from April – November.  This is a great schooling venue but also hosts several USEF recognized shows.   Aside from the many English disciplines this venue offers, there’s also a judged trail ride and Penn-Jersey English/Western show.
