German dressage heavy-hitter Matthias Rath and superstar mount Totilas have been withdrawn from contention for their nation’s Olympic dressage team.

Rath has been struggling to recover from mononucleosis, and Germa team doctor Dr. Manfred Giensch has advised him that the intense physical activity involved in training for the Games could have serious detrimental effects on his health. He does not expect Rath to be recovered by the time of the Olympics, so the rider has withdrawn himself from consideration for the team.

While Rath is understandably very disappointed, he stated that he is making the responsible decision both for his own health, and for the teammates that would have been depending on him.
