In an unfortunate turn of events, Pennsylvania resident Boyd Martin withdrew his horse Otis Barboitiere following the second veterinary inspection before the show jumping portion of the eventing competition. With one man down, the United States riders finished in 7th place, missing a medal by four places. It's truly a disappointing finish for a team that held high hopes. A victorious Germany claimed the gold medal, Great Britain took silver, and New Zealand won the bronze. Full team results are below:

Individually the U.S. riders didn't fare much better, with Karen O'Connor ranked highest in 9th place overall after a lovely individual show jumping round. Phillip Dutton finished in 23rd, Will Coleman in 37th, and Tiana Coudray in 40th. In characteristic fashion, Germany's Michael Jung captured the gold, Sweden's Sara Algotsson Ostholt won silver, and another German rider, Sandra Auffarth won bronze.
