Penn Vet's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA is one of the nation's foremost equine veterinary hospitals. From routine exams to cutting-edge surgeries and diagnostics, New Bolton's vets work hard to keep Eastern PA horses healthy.

Among the many veterinary services offered here is care for pregnant mares and their foals. Mares prone to foaling complications are admitted to the hospital before giving birth, and babies born with ‘special needs' receive the treatment they need in the Neonatal ICU. These fragile infants need monitoring around the clock, and to help care for them New Bolton recruits volunteers to act as Foal Sitters during the foaling season. Foal sitters assist hospital staff in meeting the needs of newborn horses.

If you would like to have a part in taking care of baby horses this winter and spring, you can apply to be a foal sitter at New Bolton Center. Night owls are particularly appreciated, as most mares tend to give birth in the middle of the night.  Foal sitters must be at least 16 years old, and can apply to volunteer by sending an email to: foalsitters@nicuvet.com.  Sitters will be assigned to one of three 8-hour shifts to be able to assist hospital staff 24 hours a day. Shifts begin in February and go through June, when foaling season ends.

As a foal sitter, you can expect to help out with holding foals upright when they lay down, helping staff members stand and turn foals, milking mares, monitoring equipment and alarms, changing bedding, cleaning equipment and facilities, and restocking treatment areas. No matter what duties you end up performing as a volunteer foal sitter, you'll be helping new equine babies get the very best start they can.

Foal sitting is a wonderful experience for students looking to study veterinary medicine, those interested in breeding, and anyone with horse sense and a willingness to stay up all night waiting for the chance to see a foal being born. If foal sitting sounds like a volunteer opportunity you'd like to take advantage of, contact New Bolton and apply today!
